Roche Diagnostics Recognized For Its Innovation, Product Design and Leadership in Diabetes Care Technology in 2002

Basel, Switz. - January 20, 2003 - For more than 25 years, Roche Diagnostics has been a pioneer and leader in the development of blood glucose monitoring systems. The company's commitment to make living with diabetes easier was acknowledged as numerous European and US organizations recognized Roche for its continued dedication to innovation, design and leadership in diabetes care technology. Roche received the following awards in 2002: The Design Business Association (UK) and The Chicago Athenaeum Good Design Award (US) for Accu-Chek Inform; The US National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) and Canon Communications LLC best product in home healthcare and medical design award and The Medical Design Excellence Award for Accu-Chek Compact; and several E-Healthcare/ Leadership Awards (US).

Accu-Chek Inform
The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, announced that Roche Diagnostics and Kinneir Dufort received the Good Design award in the medical equipment category for its Accu-Chek Inform. Founded in 1950, Good Design is the world's oldest and most celebrated awards program that bestows international recognition upon designers and manufacturers for advancing new and innovative product concepts and originality.

The Good Design Award was announced just one month after the company received a prestigious award from the UK Design Business Association for the design and commercial effectiveness of the Accu-Chek Inform. The main requisite to achieve this award is proven sales growth by superior product design.

Accu-Chek Compact
The US National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) and Canon Communications LLC awarded Roche Diagnostics for the best product in home healthcare and medical design for its integrated blood glucose monitoring system - the Accu-Chek Compact System.

The Accu-Chek Compact System integrates multiple features into a single system. The Accu-Chek Compact System being "the one with the drum™," eliminates the need to handle test strips and code keys. The automatic coding and the integrated test strips allow for easier and safer handling.

Roche Diagnostics also was named a gold winner at the Medical Design Excellence Awards Competition, sponsored by Canon Communications LLC, during the Medical Design and Manufacturing East (MDEA) 2002 Conference and Exposition in New York City. This award recognizes products for innovation, design and engineering excellence, end-user and patient benefits, and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing and the healthcare industry. MDEA is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products.

E-Healthcare and Excellence in Healthcare
Roche Diagnostics E-Business unit received nine awards during the Healthcare Internet & Technology conference for leading the industry in e-healthcare strategies. The website, Accu-Chek.com, won silver awards for best site content and best site design. Other awards included: CEO Commitment to Healthcare, overall Internet site, e-Business strategy and interactivity. Sites receiving the 2002 e-Healthcare Leadership Awards were selected from more than 1,000 entries.

Additionally, Frost & Sullivan, a global leader in strategic market training and growth consulting, honored Roche Diagnostics Corporation, the center of the North American headquarters for the diagnostics and diabetes business, with the presentation of three prominent awards: The Company of the Year, Market Engineering Leadership and CEO of the Year.

"The Frost and Sullivan and E-Healthcare awards are an honor because they are a testimony to our innovative and talented people," said Martin Madaus, President and CEO of Roche Diagnostics, North America. "Our culture and commitment to developing products and services that make living with diabetes easier, drives us to do our very best for our customers.
