Roche Diagnostics and BodyMedia® Create Relationship to
Provide Innovative Health Information Solutions
Basel, Switz. - February 25, 2003 - Roche Diagnostics and BodyMedia®
Inc. announced today a two-year strategic agreement to develop and
market innovative health information solutions around continuous
body monitoring. This collaboration agreement will focus on optimizing
the BodyMedia wearable body- monitoring device and software in clinical
applications, starting with clinical weight, diabetes, and cardiovascular
disease management.
Under the terms of the agreement, Roche Diagnostics has exclusive
worldwide co-development and distribution rights to BodyMedia's
technology in several key clinical areas. Roche can contribute to
the relationship with expertise in developing actionable health
information for chronic diseases, medical products, and healthcare
industry needs. Together with BodyMedia, Roche Diagnostics will
start a pilot program in 2003 to test an initial offering in the
U.S. market. Once customer acceptance and market potential are proven,
Roche will implement a broader strategy to distribute BodyMedia's
technology platform, including the SenseWear Armband, SenseWear
Transceiver programmable module, and InnerView software applications
in the fields of clinical and program weight management, diabetes,
and cardiovascular disease.
The SenseWear Armband uses multiple sensors and proprietary algorithms
to calculate energy expenditure, activity level, number of steps
per day, and sleep efficiency. The Transceiver module can be embedded
in numerous clinical devices to enable communication with the SenseWear
Armband. Additionally, BodyMedia provides software applications
to allow individuals and their care providers to track caloric intake,
caloric burn, energy balance, and other key body parameters.
By integrating clinical information, such as blood glucose, blood
pressure, and heart rate into the BodyMedia lifestyle information,
rich content and patient coaching can be given to the wearer to
assist in managing chronic diseases.
"Roche Diagnostics is committed to innovations around actionable
health information and e-health. BodyMedia's technology and software
are complementary to our current offerings around diabetes and other
chronic diseases. We believe that continuous body monitoring is
a unique way to combine lifestyle information with clinical disease
information from numerous devices to deliver actionable information
for both the patient and the professional caregiver." said
Heino von Prondzynski, head of Roche Diagnostics and a member of
Roche's Corporate Executive Committee.
"Obesity is a growing epidemic in industrialized nations,
with a tremendous impact on numerous diseases and healthcare spending.
The weight management market in the United States alone is over
40 billion dollars. Approximately two of three Americans are overweight
or obese, and over 45% of the population of people with diabetes
in the United States are also treated for obesity." he added.
"Roche Diagnostics is a world-class, innovative organization
and the leading in-vitro diagnostics company globally, with
a strong history of developing and selling groundbreaking medical
technologies. We are excited about the opportunity to further develop
and accelerate BodyMedia's technology into these clinical market,"
