Roche Diagnostics Awarded Blood Gas Contract by Novation®

Roche Diagnostics Corporation announced today that the company has signed a three-year contract with Novation, the supply company of VHA, Inc. and University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), to make available blood gas analyzers, reagents, and consumables to the more than 2,300 VHA and UHC hospitals and health care facilities served by Novation. The new agreement also extends to health care organizations that purchase supplies through HealthCare Purchasing Partners International . The contract is valued at a potential $17 million per year.

In addition to the blood gas award, which includes the OMNI MODULAR and Roche OMNI® C Analyzers and DataCare™ IT solution, Roche Diagnostics is currently under contract with Novation for blood glucose monitoring, chemistry and immunochemistry products. This enables VHA, UHC and HPPI members to draw upon Roche Diagnostics' broad portfolio of total laboratory solutions in their quest to increase laboratory efficiency while enhancing services to their physicians with timely and actionable information for patient management.

"We are delighted to have the opportunity to expand our partnership with Novation and broaden our contract portfolio to VHA, UHC and HPPI members," said Dick Aderman, senior vice president and general manager, Roche Centralized and Molecular Diagnostics.

"Roche was awarded this dual-source contract based on input from member surveys and the Novation Respiratory Council, made up of member clinicians and purchasing executives," said Larry Dooley, vice president, Contract and Program Services, for Novation. "Their decision measured both financial and non-financial criteria, such as performance, quality and response time."

Blood gas testing is key to today's clinical laboratories and provides important information on patient status based on the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide gases in the blood. This information may be used in respiratory, metabolic or kidney disorders.

Based in Irving, Tex., Novation was established in January 1998 through a combination of the supply programs of VHA and UHC, two national health care alliances. Novation serves the purchasing needs of more than 2,300 members and affiliates of VHA and UHC. In 2003, VHA and UHC members purchased more than $23 billion in supplies through Novation contracts.
